Website gets figures on airports built under Duterte wrong

Website Filipiknow Times falsely reported that 200 international and domestic airports have been built during President Rodrigo Duterte’s term.

The article’s headline says:

MAKASAY-SAYAN ANG GINAWA SA PILIPINAS! DUTERTE ADMIN. NAKAPAGPATAYO NG 200 INTERNATION AT DOMESTIC AIRPORT (What has been done to the Philippines is historic! The Duterte administration built 200 international and domestic airports).

The article embedded a video from journalist Erwin Tulfo reporting about the airports. Tulfo, however, did not explicitly say in the video the airports have been completed. He said:

Halos dalawang daang bagong paliparan inaasahan mapapakinabangan na ng publiko sa iba't ibang panig ng bansa bago bumaba si Pangulong Duterte sa 2022 (Almost 200 new airports in various areas of the country are expected to be operational before President Duterte steps down in 2022).

In a Nov. 14 Facebook post, the Department of Transportation said the Duterte administration has completed 64 airport projects, contrary to Filipiknow Times’ claim, and is still building 133 others.

Among the completed projects are the Lal-Lo International Airport in Cagayan and the Sangley Airport in Cavite, which officially started its construction last year and had an operational dry run last Oct. 29.

The DOTr also mentioned the Bohol-Panglao International Airport, construction of which began in 2015 under the Aquino administration. The airport was inaugurated in 2018.

The DOTr said the government is “set to build one more international airport.”

The url of the Filipiknow Times article only shows the article was published November 2019. However, the link to the article was shared by FB page DDS News Feed Nov. 10.

Crowdtangle data show the article has received 5,196 interactions, 4,213 reactions, 448 comments and 535 shares. (MC, JGL, HP)
