Presidential candidate Leni Robredo’s quote on “making stars kneel” has been taken out of context in a post that implies she will literally ask a person or a group of persons to kneel.
Facebook page “Bong bong Marcos tayo sa 2022” posted an 8-minute video with the clip of Robredo’s speech on May 9. The video’s thumbnail includes the text “BUKAS LULUHOD SILA (Tomorrow, they will kneel)” under a photo of Robredo. The title of the video and the caption of the post are “BUKAS MAY PALULUHURIN SI ROBREDO (Tomorrow, Robredo will make someone kneel)”
The video of Robredo came from her May 4 campaign rally in Zamboanga Norte where she said:
Mataas ang sariling survey ratings nila, na parang mga talang mahirap abutin. Sa araw ng election, aming sisiguraduhin na luluhod ang mga tala (Their survey ratings are high, like stars that are difficult to reach. On the day of the election, we will make sure that the stars will kneel).”
“Making stars kneel” in Filipino is a figure of speech that refers to achieving the impossible. Robredo also referred to the survey ratings, not other candidates, as the “stars.”
Comments under the post, most of which are negative, said Robredo should be the one to kneel and that she “couldn’t make (Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s) supporters kneel.”
The post has received 112 comments, 68 reactions and nine shares. The link to the video was also posted by other Facebook pages. (CC)
