Sen. Manny Pacquiao did not ask people to refrain from electing Duterte allies in the 2022 polls, contrary to an altered quote card posted by a Facebook user.
On June 3, the same day President Duterte was reported as having named Pacquaio among those he might endorse as his successor, Rhey Dionisio posted a fake quote with a caption that reads:
ANYARE? HAHAHA (What happened? hahaha)
The fabricated quote reads:
Sa susunod Na election Wag ninyong Iboboto ang Ang mga kaalyado ni Duterte kung Ayaw ninyong Malubog sa Utang (Don’t vote for Duterte allies in the upcoming elections if you don’t want to drown in debt)!
No record of Pacquiao’s supposed quote exists.
While the photo contains elements used by ABS-CBN News, it also has incorrect capitalization and unusual shapes encircled by FactRakers which indicate manipulation. It also claims Pacquiao said this during the Senate hearings on ABS-CBN’s franchise in February 2020 despite being posted on June 3.
The original quote card by ABS-CBN reads:
Parang malaking kawalan ng buong sambayanang Pilipino ang mawala ang ABS-CBN dahil napakalaking tulong ito para sa ating bansa na magkaroon ng impormasyon ang bawat isa (I think it is a big loss for the whole Filipino community to lose ABS-CBN because it is helpful in ensuring everyone in the country has information).
Bing reverse image search reveals a similar fake quote card posted on March 31, 2020 by Facebook group “Only in the philippines viral post,” which reads:
Sa susunod na eleksyon Magtanda na kayo Kapag mayaman Wag n’yo na iboto Dapat mahirap din para alam nila Ang pakiramdam Ng isang mahirap (In the next election, remember not to vote for the rich vote for someone poor so they know what being poor feels like).
Dionisio’s post circulated on Facebook amid infighting in PDP-Laban, of which he is acting president, and continued speculations over Pacquiao’s plans for next year’s elections.
Sen. Panfilo Lacson, San Miguel Corp.’s Ramon Ang and boxing promoter Bob Arum have said Pacquiao intends to run for the highest office.
Pacquiao recently clashed with Cusi over rotating power outages and the holding of the PDP-Laban national meeting without his approval. The party adopted during the meeting a resolution urging Duterte to run for vice president in 2022.
This is not the first time Pacquaio clashed with members of his political party, including Duterte, who is PDP-Laban chair. In early May, he drew flak for saying the president’s actions on the West Philippine Sea were “lacking” compared to his campaign promises in 2016.
In an exclusive interview with SMNI, Duterte said Pacquiao’s knowledge on foreign policy is “shallow” and insisted that the current foreign policy is “neutral.”
Saying he“humbly disagrees” with Duterte, the senator countered, “I firmly believe that my statement reflects the sentiment of majority of the Filipinos, that we should stand strong in protecting our sovereign rights while pursuing a peaceful and diplomatic solution to the dispute.”
As of writing, Dionisio’s post has about 750 reactions, 50 comments and 2,400 shares. Though mostly shared by individual users, it has also been shared to pages such as Opinion Publico, Pulitika sa Bukidnon and HALL OF SHAME FOR THE CORRUPT AND WICKED FILIPINOS. These public groups contain posts critical of the current administration and have memberships in the thousands.
Dionisio joined Facebook in 2009. Most of his posts criticize the current administration and express support for Vice President Leni Robredo, Pasig Mayor Vico Sotto and former President Benigno Aquino III. (LS)
