A TikTok clip of people at an Eid al-Fitr celebration in April has been misused to depict them as Duterte supporters and the audio manipulated and replaced with “Duterte” chants to reinforce the false claim.
The TikTok post by kiven lem (@basaritoroganan90) on Nov. 15 showed a panning shot of people at an event with the caption: #D30
At the time when the video was uploaded, Duterte supporters had not gathered anywhere to conduct protests.
A prayer rally in Davao happened on Nov. 23. Supporters then camped at EDSA Shrine on Nov. 26 to express support for Vice President Sara Duterte amid congressional investigations on her office’s purported misuse of confidential funds. She also came under attack for airing death threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife Liza Araneta and Speaker Martin Romualdez. She is facing impeachment complaints.
Her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, had previously attended Senate and House of Representatives hearings looking into extrajudicial killings during his brutal war on drugs. He is also being investigated by the International Criminal Court over these.
InVID’s keyframe and image magnifier tool show a banner containing the Arabic words “Eid’ul-Fitr Al-Mubarak " (Happy Eid al-Fitr) in the video
Similar TikTok videos such as those of @chenitocuadra, @kainnie123, @jenoguroabinal and @almhaser show the altered video was from the Eid al-Fitr celebration held event at the Quirino Grandstand last April 10.
Manila Bulletin also posted a photo of the event on Facebook.
Meanwhile, the chant used in the post is similar to the audio used in a TikTok video of @valliantvlog2301 posted on July 12 at an event in San Jose, Batangas.
