AI-generated foreigner in FB reel endorses Quiboloy

An AI-generated video posted on Facebook features a digitally created foreign-looking avatar endorsing detained religious leader and senatorial candidate Apollo Quiboloy who is running under the PDP Laban party led by former president Rodrigo Duterte. The person in the video is not real.

Aside from the use of an AI avatar, the Facebook reel posted by Dyan Hrtlz on April 19 contains factual inaccuracies about the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) church founded by Quiboloy and the Roman Catholic Church.

The avatar in Dyan Hrtlz’s video was created using Pippit, an AI software formerly known as CapCut Commerce Pro, which allows users to select preset avatars and sync lip movements with custom scripts. The avatar in the video is known as "Mat outdoors."

A Google reverse image search confirms the same avatar has appeared in multiple AI-generated videos, some of which are clearly labeled as AI-generated.

Dyan Hrtlz’s post made no such disclosure.

The script in the video was lifted from a Facebook post titled “QUIBOLOY: PROVEN LEADERSHIP & VISION” by Abines Ernesto Jr.,  also dated April 19.

The reel opens with the erroneous claim that Quiboloy’s church has built the “biggest indoor dome in the world” while the Roman Catholic Church has “built nothing” for Filipinos:

In the last 500 years, the Catholic Church enslaved and milked the Filipino people of tithes and donations but they built nothing for the Filipino people. Pastor Quiboloy had his KOJC for only 40 years and was able to build the biggest indoor dome in the world that will make Davaoeños and Filipinos proud. The only mistake of Pastor Quiboloy was his being a friend and the strongest supporter of former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

The video was referring to KOJC’s King Dome in Davao City, which is planned to be the largest indoor arena with a seating capacity of 75,000. However, the structure remains under construction with completion, originally set in 2022, repeatedly delayed multiple times. Quiboloy previously attributed the delays partly to the shipping of materials from Vietnam and China.

At present, the Philippine Arena, with a seating capacity of more than 50,000, holds the title as the largest indoor arena.

Quiboloy was arrested last Sept. 8 inside the KOJC compound where the King Dome is located. He is detained at Camp Crame in Quezon City, facing charges of child abuse, sexual abuse and human trafficking. He is also on the FBI’s most wanted list.

These criminal charges contradict the video’s claim that Quiboloy’s “only mistake” was his close alliance with Duterte.

The video’s claim that the Catholic Church “built nothing for the Filipino people” over the past 500 years is also misleading. In reality, the Church has established significant infrastructure in the country, including over 150 churches and more than 1,500 schools.

Notable examples include the Manila Cathedral, the country’s first cathedral and regarded as the "Mother of all Churches, Cathedrals, and Basilicas" in the country; and the San Agustin Church, completed in 1607, a recognized historical landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The University of Santo Tomas, founded in 1611, is the oldest university in Asia.

As of this writing, the video has received 1,300 reactions, 100 comments and 1,900 shares. The Facebook page was created last Nov. 26 and has 6,400 followers.  (DPA)
